The most acceptable one is that the festival is celebrated in memory of the Chinese poet Qu Yuan.Because he was distgusted by the corruption of the Chu government,Qu took his own life by drowning himself in the Miluo River.The local people threw bamboo leaves with cooked rice into the water to prevent fish from eating Qu's body.This later turned into the custom of eating zongzi on DuanWu Festival.
They also sat on long and narrow paddle boats called dragon boats and tried to scare the fish away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat.The race also demonstrate the Cinese virtues of cooperation and teamwork.
In order to speard Chinese culture,Duan Wu Festival became one of the national holidays in2008.
