Ministers have been accused of failing to protect the public from dangerous dogs after the death of a 10-year-old boy today and the mauling of a six-week-old baby earlier in the week.MPs warned the government in October that children and adults were suffering “catastrophic injuries” and said they were concerned that ministers believed that the current legislation was successful. The report, published by the environment, food and rural affairs (Efra) select committee, said: “The increase in [dog] attacks — most of them from legal breeds — clearly indicates that the current approach is failing to protect the public adequately.”Andrew Rosindell, the Conservative MP for Romford, described the Dangerous Dogs Act today as a “failed piece of legislation” because of its focus on particular breeds, rather than a dog’s behaviour.
