他说出这句话的第一个原因是他爱着自己生活的这个地方。所以他想要好好保护这个地方。他不愿意自己从小长大的地方就这么被战争玷污，而他又无法阻值战争，所以参军便成了他惟一可以做的事情。这是他可以向他的家乡唯一可以证明自己的事。

其次就是他在与charlie的点滴相处中发现自己的弱小和无能无力。他爱的人不爱他，他有太多的东西都无法保护。所以他渴望可以站在一个与charlie平齐的高度去证明自己并非这么弱小。所以，他决定去参加军队来提升自己。在他心中，参军是男子汉才能做的事。长期的生活造成了他以charlie为追赶的目标。所以charlie参军了他便迫切地想追赶charlie来以此证明自己不是一个懦弱的胆小鬼。

最后一个原因，也是我认为的最重要的一个原因，那就是他从小到大的生活中有太多超出他的年级可以去承受的东西，这让他对自己的人生产生迷茫。造成了他对自己认知的一种缺失。这也让他开始思考自己的人生。所以这让他迫切需要证明自己并填补自己的人生。也许在他心里认为参军可以弥补这种缺失。
所以，这影响了他参军的这个决定。

This made him rethink about his life. Therefore it made him eager to prove himself and fill up his life. Perhap he thought joining army could make up this absence.

Therefore, this affected his decision of joining the army.

so all these reasons affected his decision of joining in the march.
