1.Several years ago, a football player was shot to death on the University of Memphis campus. His death shocked and saddened a community that once felt safe from Memphis, Tennessee's mean urban streets. The same Memphis streets also claimed the life of former NBA player, Lorenzo Wright last year.
2.In 2007, On the Virginia Tech campus, a Korean student opened fire on residents in the Norris Hall and afterwards stalked through the halls of an adjacent building. He alleged chainlocked(用链锁锁住) the exit doors trapping those inside. For several minutes, he went about shooting down anyone who couldn't escape. He blasted at barricaded classrooms to get to more victims. During the massacre（大屠杀）, campus security, Blacksburg police, state police and SWAT rescued students hanging from windows and attempted to gain entry. Nonetheless, it was too late. The shooter committed suicide and killed 32 others. Another 20 suffered minor to serious injuries.
3.Among the dead was Livivu Caucescu. As a youngster, he survived years while imprisoned in a Nazi war camp. Caucescu saved his students by putting his body against the classroom door. As the killer shot through it, his lifeless body provided the dead weight needed to keep out the assailant.
4.Last week, tragedy returned to Virginia Tech as a policeman was gunned down during a routine, traffic stop. This crime displayed evidence that campus violence still remains a worldwide concern.
5.Violent crimes at colleges have been a problem for a long time. If it isn't members of the LSU football team involved in a brawl（争吵）, it's a teacher killing two students and herself in a love triangle at Louisiana Tech.
6.We have learned some lessons from Virginia Tech. These lessons are spreading to campuses across the country. And hopefully, there will be a uniform safety code which should insure our students' safety. Until then, here are some basic ideas college staff, faculty and administrators can use to keep their campuses safe.
