Question

This is, obviously, the first entry in this journal. It will be used primarily as a dumping ground for ideas and thoughts pertaining to my ethnomusicology tutorial with Prof. Mercedes Dujunco at Bard College, my experiences with the Chinese Erhu (two stringed fiddle), my upcoming research trip to China, as well as my general thoughts on world music, art, and, occasionally, foreign policy.

As it stands, I hope to travel to China this summer to do some introductory research in the realm of Chinese music. The idea is not to discover some lost mountain tribe whose music chronicles the flight of Jesus from earth via an alien spaceship and achieve infinite fame within the anthropologist community. It is meant as a kiddy-pool inroad into the world of ethnomusicological research, limited to 3-4 weeks.

My topic for research in China:

In the late 80s-early 90s, rock and roll became popular in China, specifically Beijing. Now it is on
the wain, with its popularity limited to small crowds in Beijing. How do rock bands survive in a
culture where, unlike the United States, rock is truly an underground phenomenon? Are there
bands outside beijing? How do they survive as musical entities? How much does their prolificness
depend on government support, and if they are not popular, what does that say about chinese
popular culture? Many journalists ask these sorts of questions, but I would like to take this topic
into the realm of research. For this I would to travel to Beijing, visit clubs that play rock music, and
try to figure out how many people go to these concerts, and who they are. I would also ask people
on the street whether or not they like rock and roll from China. Ideally, I would try to bring my
research outside of beijing for some time.
