日本的国花樱花(Cherry blossom)就源于一个美丽动人的神话故事。据说，在很久以前，有一个聪明美丽的姑娘、名叫木花开耶姬。木花开耶姬即樱花的意思。有一年年底，她从日本冲绳出发，途经九洲，关西、关东，于第二年五，六月间到达北海道，沿途中，她把一朵朵樱花撒遍日本各地。从此，樱花在日本盛开千载。且年年灿若云霞。日本人民非常喜爱樱花。日本人民之所以将樱花定为国花，除了它的纯洁、雅丽、崇高外，还为了纪念那勤劳、善良的木花开耶姬姑娘、并以此象征勤劳、智慧、勇敢的日本人民。
秘鲁的国花是向日葵(Sunflower)，又叫太阳花，相传在远古时代、秘鲁的印第安人过着渔猎、采集的原始生活，太阳神为他们的艰苦奋斗精神所感动，赐给他们犁和种子。他们用金犁开垦沉睡的大地、播下种子，从此地里长出了可供食用的五谷，秘鲁人民因此对太阳怀有深厚的感情，并将永远朝向太阳的向日葵定为国花。
法国国花鸢尾花(1ris)，鸢尾花属鸢尾科，欧洲人把它叫做百合花——“佛罗士百合花”。它看上去很像百合花，但与百合花分属不同科属。它的花朵分三瓣，心房深处有三枚长舌状的瓣，酷似百合。鸢尾花大而美，像翩翩起舞的彩蝶和飞舞的隼鸢。法国选鸢尾花做国花、以表示光明和自由。象征民族纯洁、庄严和磊落。

英国国花玫瑰(Rose)。玫瑰花属蔷薇科，和月季花，蔷微花是同科同属的姊妹花，因此很难细分。据说全世界有4000多个品种，玫瑰花有红、黄、白多种颜色，花开季节，妖艳多姿，香气袭人。在中东和欧洲一些国家，称“玫瑰花”为“花中之王”、“花中皇后”。玫瑰花不仅有很高的观赏价值，还有很高的经济价值。玫瑰花可以提炼玫瑰油、而两滴玫瑰油就可以制出一种香味浓烈的玫瑰香水。因此，一公斤玫瑰油可换来1．5公斤的黄金，玫瑰花还可用来熏茶酿酒制药和配制香料等。英国栽培玫瑰花的历史悠久，自古以来英国人民就把它作为美好愿望和崇高理想的象征，欧洲人常常用玫瑰花来象征爱情，因此，除英国外，还有保加利亚，捷克、斯洛伐克、卢森堡、伊朗、伊拉克等国家，也把玫瑰花定为国花。
加拿大国花枫树叶(3ugar maple)。加拿大境内多枫树、素有“枫叶之国”的美誉。长期以来，加拿大人民对枫叶有着深厚的感情、把枫叶作为国徽，国旗正中绘有三片红色枫叶，国歌为《枫叶·万岁》，国树为枫树。加拿大人民数百年来之所以对枫叶如此一往情深，首先因为它美丽。每到深秋时节，那橙红、火红、鲜红、深红的枫叶、满山遍野、灿若朝霞，瑰丽状观，令人赞叹。枫叶除具有观赏价值外，还具有经济价值，尤其是糖枫和黑枫，本身就是熬制糖浆的上好原料。枫树液含糖量为0．5％至7％，高达10％，一株15年树龄的枫树每年可连续产糖50年以上。每年3月开始，加拿大都要举办传统的“枫糖节”，人民可以尽情地去品尝甘美的枫糖。这样，加拿大把枫叶定为国花，也是情理中的事了。
墨西哥国花仙人掌(Cactus)。墨西哥享有仙人掌之国之美誉，世界上的仙人掌类植物大约有2000多种，有一半左右的仙人掌在墨西哥生长，其中200多种又是墨西哥所特有的。仙人掌的形态可谓千姿百态，应有尽有。球状的叫仙人球，直径可达2—3米，有鞭状的仙人鞭，棍状的仙人棒，柱状的仙人柱，有的高达十六、七米，有的仙人掌身上长满刺，有的则无刺、有的仙人掌不开花、有的仙人掌开满红色、黄色、白色、橙黄色、绛紫色等色彩各异，大小不等的花朵。花期虽短，但花香阵阵沁人心脾，仙人掌的千姿百态，常青不凋，坚韧不拔的性格给人以力量、勇气和信心。
仙人掌还有广泛的经济用途。它的驱干可作建筑材料，肉茎既可烹制各种菜肴，又可直接人口当水果吃，其纤维可用于织布，它还可以用作制作胶水的工业原料：仙人掌人药，对一些疑难病症都有很好的疗效。因此，墨西哥人民把观赏和经济价值兼备的仙人掌作为国家和民族的象征，将它定为国花。
