John Cena1999年加入UPW.是由小联盟出来的摔角手。2002年6月进入WWE，当时还是很平实的造型，但是他的对手就很有分量。第一场他就对上Kurt Angal，跟着还有Chris Jerrico。2002年底，他和Bull Buchanan组成双打，他的hip-hop造型基本成形，虽然他已经崭露头角，但那时还不太显眼。不久后他与Rikishi不和，能用绝招对付这个超过300磅的对手，他开始吸引观众视线。
