monkey

Monkeys have many different adaptations, depending on their habitat. Most are arboreal. Others, like macaques Macaca sp. and baboons Papio sp., are more terrestrial. All monkeys can use their hands and feet for holding on to branches, but some arboreal monkeys can use their tails, too. Tails that can grab and hold are called prehensile. These special tails are ridged on the underside and very flexible, so much so that they can grab a tree branch or pick up something as small as a peanut! Prehensile tails come in handy for holding on while the monkey collects food: flowers, fruits, nuts, leaves, seeds, insects, birds’ eggs, spiders, and small mammals.

Monkeys at the San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park are offered a variety of fruits and vegetables, special herbivore biscuits, and a variety of leafy branches to munch on.

The black spider monkey

The black spider monkey has exceptionally long, slender limbs and an even longer tail. Where possible, the spider monkey will run on all fours along the tops of branches. But where there is a break in the intertwined canopy of the trees, it will swing or leap from one tree to another. On the rare occasion when the spider monkey sets foot on the ground, it may walk upright on two legs with its long tail held stiffly up against its back. The spider monkey lives in loose-knit, nomadic troops which vary in size according to the availability of food. There are usually no more than 18 monkeys per square mile of forest, but where food is plentiful, as many as 100 may live together.

Dogs belong to the canine.
When a dog follows its nose, it’s actually being led by thee key senses. Sight:a glimpse of the enemy saves them barking up the wrong tree. Sound: a bark can be a fierce threat, but it’s also how canines make their long distance calls. Smell: this tells a dog more than all the other senses put together.
Inside its nose are around two hundred million smell sensitive cells, forty times more than in humans. Through them the dog’s brain can pick up signals from one molecule of scent in a million. It gives the dog: a completely different picture of the world, based on what it smells, rather than what it sees.
Flowers are irrelevant to a dog. So their scent is meaningless. But food is a serious matter. What to us is an empty plate, is covered with the smell of chicken to a hungry dog.

I have a cat named Mimi. Its hair is as white as snow. I often play games with it. It amuses me a lot and I treat it as a little friend. Every morning, I would say goodbye to it before I go to school and Mimi would wave its front-legs to me. It brings me a lot of pleasure. But it takes time and costs money to keep the cat. My parents and I spend much time taking care of it, feeding it and cleaning it. We have to clean the house from time to time, or the cat will make them dirty and smelly.
