THE TRACTION MOTOR for the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is needed to have low torque ripple and cogging torque as well as high power density. In order to maximize power density, many researchers have selected the IPMSM out of the various permanent magnet motors because of the reluc¬tance torque generation mechanism of the IPMSM. Moreover, the permanent magnet of high power density and segment stator teeth capable of high winding fill factor were used for the same reason [1], [2]. Y. Honda reported the IPMSM with C-shaped double layer PM configuration and insisted that this type is the best solution for the HEV
In the paper, the optimal pole-arc to pole-pitch ratio for the torque characteristic is presented by analyzing the effect of torque ripple as well as back EMF waveform. Second, we analyze the characteristics according to the saliency due to the duct structures in which the PM is inserted. The saliency has relation with q-axis and d-axis magnetic paths for magnetic flux.
The demagnetization capability should be investigated for the design of the IPMSM. Design of the duct structure has an effect on the durability of demagnetization. Once demagnetization takes place, the performance of the HEV is critically deteriorated [4]. For the characteristic analysis, 2-D FEM is used. The EMF experiment result is compared with the simulation result for verification of the analysis method.

torque ripple: 因磁力互斥而产生的力矩的不平滑性。转子和定子之间距离近的时候torque(力矩)大,远的时候力矩小,这种因距离产生的大小不一的力矩就像波浪一样,所以叫ripple。

cogging torque: 转子形成的磁场和定子的槽中间的磁场相互作用,产生的力矩。这种力矩是转动的阻力。

Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (IPMSM) :转子和定子的永久磁场之间同步的电机(不知道和永磁同步电动机是不是一个意思。)
