China: Changing channels
The country's TV landscape is modernizing as upstart players look to take on an established giant.

By Jonathan Landreth
BEIJING -- It's a scene familiar on television the world over: teens and twentysomethings singing their hearts out in the latest round of a nationally broadcast primetime contest meant to catapult them to stardom.

Call it "American Idol" in Chinese, if you like.

The finale of "Super Girl Voice" from Hunan Satellite TV made Chinese television history last Friday by becoming the first hit from a provincial broadcaster and producer to draw more viewers than the biggest annual TV event of the year -- the Spring Festival Eve gala, which is always broadcast by state-run flagship channel China Central Television-1, the China Daily reported over the weekend.

The show -- whose main sponsor is an Inner Mongolian dairy -- has drawn scads of local media attention and is exiciting producers and advertisers alike.

And for good reason: A raft of new shows from provincial TV companies are getting past censors in Beijing at the State Administration of Radio Film and Television, which must, at some level, approve everything that airs on the small screen.

State-run broadcaster China Central Television has dominated the airwaves for years, but that could be changing as Chinese lifestyles shift.

Beijingers, whose annual per capita living expenses are more than twice the national average at 11,123 yuan ($1,372), often wear fashionable black year-round, clog the roads with a swelling fleet of sleek European sports cars, and keep the black market busy with a growing appetite for counterfeit Armani, Bally and Christian Dior.

At the other extreme, official statistics show China's poorest rural residents, who number about 90 million, earn about 865 yuan ($104) a year.

A great many Beijingers still rise with the sun -- filling the public parks with early-morning bouts of badminton and cliques of traditional fan dancers -- and wind down early, eating dinner by 7 p.m., when the nightly primetime news begins, then staying close to home after dark.

But as China industrializes and as incomes and leisure time rise, more people stay up late, surfing the Internet and the roughly 50 TV channels now available to the common home, including more than 10 from CCTV and at least 30 from provincial and local broadcasters.

Although CCTV, now run by influential industry figure Zhao Huayong, has the broadest reach of any one broadcaster, not all of its channels are available everywhere in China, competing as they do with local terrestrial, foreign satellite and, increasingly, entrepreneurial provincial satellite stations.
