A young man who lived in Paris was in love with a beautiful girl. Soon she became his fiancé(未婚妻). The man was very poor
while the girl was rich. The young man wanted to make her a present on her birthday. He wanted to buy something beautiful for
her, but he had no idea how to do it, as he had very little money. The next morning he went to a shop. There were many fine
things there: rings(戒指), gold watches, diamonds(钻石)—but all these things were too expensive. There was one thing that
caught his eyes. It was a beautiful vase(花瓶). That would be a wonderful present for his fiancé. He had been looking at the
vase for half an hour when the manager asked what had happened to him.
The young man told him everything, the manager felt sorry for him and decided to help him. He came up with a wonderful idea.
the manager pointed to the corner of the shop. To his great surprise, the young man saw a vase broken into many pieces. The
manager said, “ I can help you. I shall order my servant to pack it and take it to your fiancé. When he enters the room, he
will drop it.”
On the birthday of his fiancé, the young man was very excited. Everything happened as it had been planned. The servant
brought into vase, as he entered the room, he dropped it.
There was horror(恐惧)on everyone’s face. When the vase was unpacked(打开), the guests saw that each piece was packed
separately(单独的).

Eating is important to everyone. But not many people have time to think about what to eat.
"Fast food is easy," says Sarah Hudson, a 14-year-old high school student from America. She is enjoying her lunch at
McDonald's. "lt's quick and it is delicious. If they made healthy food, I wouldn't buy it. " She eats fast food about twice a
week.
Now each American eats about three hamburgers and four bags of French fries or potato chips every week. That is 2 520
calories(卡路里,热量单位). A person needs about 2 000 calories for a whole day. Most Americans know that fast food isn't good
for them But it seems that they can't give it up. In fact, more and more people are eating fast food, and fast food
restaurants are part of American life. 96% of American school children know McDonalcl's.
Because they love the French fries, it's no surprise that children are getting bigger. In America, 33% of them are
overweighi or too heavy. That makes it hard for them to move around, go up.stairs and even breathe. They will probably have
health problems later in life. Of course it's not ju.st young people who are getting heavier. It's all Americans.
