Why is it so important? Well in basic terms the heat treatment ensures the aluminium ends up at the optimum hardness to give a perfect balance between strength, toughness and ductility. With no heat treatment at all the aluminium would be soft and very weak, over heat treated the aluminium becomes too hard and therefore in danger of being too brittle. We aim for the optimum hardness to be strong, tough and ductile. This means that every individual product (or component part) has a tailor made recipe stipulating the time and temperature at which the product is treated. The term heat treatment involves two processes. The first (solution treatment or hardening) where the aluminium is heated in a furnace to a relatively high temperature for a short period of time and then quenched immediately in water. (around 470 degrees C for anywhere between 30 minutes to 50 minutes for
