Chhabra (2004) argued that festival visitors are a broader segment that should include
participants and exhibitors. The primary argument opined that festival exhibitors are
more than just a product of the festival because they also generate positive economic
impacts for the host region or locality. Chhabra’s argument hinged on expenditures
related to the festival participation of exhibitors on the following items: lodging,
restaurants, gasoline, and grocery stores, and registration fees. Each of these aspects
form the basis that exhibitors merit closer attention in tourism research and they
should not be omitted from future festival economic impact studies.
Chhabra’s (2004) proposal to redefine the festival visitor to include exhibitors
was an advantageous move. Redefining the exhibitor as another festival visitor is only
the beginning in understanding exhibitors’ overall relationship with festivals.
To understand exhibitors’ relationship with festivals, there is a need to identify the
integral components that comprise their presence at the festival and the economic
impact that they may potentially bring. The objective of this paper is to identify those
integral components of the exhibitor relationship and to propose a research agenda for
analyzing festival exhibitors.
